Richmond Council has unveiled a new strategy to transform the borough's nightlife, creating a safer, more vibrant, and inclusive experience for all residents, workers, and visitors.

The Night-Time Strategy, which shapes life in Richmond upon Thames between 6pm and 6am, focuses on improving opportunities for young people, building on the borough's rich music heritage, and ensuring a diverse range of affordable activities for all.

It also sets out clear measures to improve the safety and working conditions of night-time employees.

The launch event, held at All Bar One last night (Wednesday, 5 March), brought together local businesses, community organisations and key stakeholders, including representatives from the Greater London Authority and Richmond Council.

Guests heard from speakers on the importance of rethinking Richmond's night-time offer to ensure it is vibrant, accessible, and welcoming to everyone.

Councillor Phil Giesler, Lead Member for Business and Growth, said: "Richmond has long been known for its historic charm and natural beauty, but we need to ensure that our night-time economy is just as exciting and accessible as our daytime offer.

"This strategy delivers on our commitment to making Richmond a place where everyone – young people, workers, businesses, and visitors – can enjoy safe, diverse, and affordable experiences after dark.

"Young people have told us they feel left out of the borough's night-time offer, and this strategy puts them at the heart of our plan through more music venues, affordable cultural activities, and safer ways to get around at night.

"We also recognise the huge contribution of night workers and want to ensure they have better conditions and services available to them. This is about making the borough's night-time welcoming, safe, and accessible to all."

The evening also saw the announcement of the Night-Time Photography Competition winner, Colette Hewitt, whose image captured the vitality of Richmond Theatre after dark.

The winning and shortlisted images were on display, celebrating Richmond's evolving night-time identity through the eyes of its residents.

The strategy is the result of extensive consultation with young people, businesses, night workers, and residents. It outlines key priorities for Richmond's night-time economy, including:

  • More activities for young people – creating new spaces and events beyond pubs and restaurants
  • A stronger live music scene – encouraging new venues and performances to celebrate Richmond's musical heritage
  • Better support for night workers – improving conditions, access to services, and safer travel options
  • Safer and more accessible streets – working with transport providers and police to improve the night-time experience
  • A more diverse and affordable night-time economy – ensuring Richmond's high streets remain vibrant and inclusive

The Council aims for this strategy to boost investment and collaboration between local businesses, cultural organisations, and community groups, ensuring that Richmond's nightlife is welcoming for everyone.
