The best places to live in the country, based on statistics, have been revealed.

Reach PLC's data team has crunched the numbers on everything from house prices and crime rates to schools, the NHS and local amenities to discover the best places to live in England.

While Richmond borough ranked 64th out of 294 local authorities in the country, it was found to be the number one place to live in London.

But what gives Richmond this ranking?

Well, it won't be the borough's house prices as the data reveals that Richmond has been ranked number 291 out of the 294 local authorities included in terms of house prices.

This is because in February this year, the average house price in the borough was £788,485.

As for crime, our borough was ranked 96 out of the 294 local authorities with the crime rate per 1,000 people being 61.7 in 2024.

Richmond was, however, ranked in 9th place in terms of schooling with average Attainment 8 score of 56.4 in the year 2023/24.

This is calculated by adding up the points earned from the highest grades achieved in eight qualifying GCSE subjects, with extra weight given to English and Maths. The maximum score achievable is 90.

Richmond borough also had an average Progress 8 score of 0.43 in 2023/24.

This shows how much progress pupils made between the end of key stage 2 and the end of key stage 4, compared to pupils across England who got similar results. A score above zero means pupils made more progress, on average, while a score below zero means pupils made less progress, on average.

As for the borough's access to NHS facilities, Richmond ranked 12 out of the 294 local authorities with the percentage of patients seen for treatment within the 18-week target after referral being 65.2 per cent in March 2025.

Moreover, the borough's median waiting time from referral to treatment (weeks) was 11.4 in March 2025 and 83.7 per cent of Richmond borough patients rated the GPs in the area as 'good' in 2024.

And as for access to amnesties, the borough was ranked 180 out of the 294 local authorities. These rankings include:

  • Parks and Play areas per 100,000 people, Oct 2024:72.6
  • Pubs per 100,000 people, Oct 2024:61.4
  • Community Facilities per 100,000 people, Oct 2024:47.6
  • Post Offices per 100,000 people:8.2
  • % of residents who are less than a 15-minute walk from nearest railway station, Oct 2024:78%

While 64 out of 294 local authorities may seem low, Reach PLC said: "Local authorities in London are consistently let down by high house prices - if these weren't taken into account, Richmond upon Thames would have ranked at 22nd overall."

To create the rankings, Reach PLC looked at the latest official figures for 11 different measures at a local authority level - excluding City of London and Isle of Scilly, which have particularly small populations.
