Quins scrum half Lucy Packer praised for World Cup final performance amid blast at trolls

England and Quins scrum half, Lucy Packer, has won praise from elite rugby coaches and fans after stepping in to the Red Roses team ahead of the World Cup final.

The number 9 was a late addition to the starting line-up following an injury to Leanne Infante.

Although relatively inexperienced in terms of international caps, she marshalled the team to a 26-19 lead at half time.

Packer was replaced for the second half where the Red Roses – down to 14 for most of the match - suffered heartbreak in the last minute after the Black Ferns managed to steal a line-out on their try line.

However, after the game, there was some criticism of Packer, aged 22, on social media.

Leanne Infante came to her team mate's support, writing on social media how well Packer had played and calling on the trolls to cease their criticism.

She wrote: "Please can we all take a minute to appreciate what's just happened. Lucy's hurting just as much as everyone right now and social media can be truly cruel.

"She has just started in a World Cup final, at her first World Cup tournament. She did everything that was required of her yesterday, and she did it extremely well!

"I personally couldn't have done any more than what she gave to the team yesterday. Her speed of ball and defensive efforts was phenomenal.

"I am unbelievably proud of her (any everyone else that took to the field), and so is her family.

"I ask you to stop the nasty commented and watch the game back with perception. Let Lucy and her family digest this amazing achievement.

"We will come back stronger, together."

Hundreds of fans joined the praise of Packer along with many from inside the game. Mike Friday, who is the current coach of the USA men's rugby 7s team, wrote: "I watched the game Leanne. Lucy had a good game.

"As you say her speed of ball and accuracy was decent and she was sharp in and out of the breakdown. She is a credit to the Red Roses and has a bright future for sure. Stay strong."

Among the many other positive comments, one fan and coach said: "She played incredibly well and controlled the game brilliantly. She should be proud of herself for playing magnificently, and ignore the armchair critics who have no idea!"
