A popular festival, which took place in Richmond's town centre last year, is set to return this summer, the council has announced.

Centre Stage will return on Saturday, 18 July as Richmond Council partners with Orange Tree Theatre and Richmond BID to transform George Street and Whittaker Square into a free, day-long celebration of music, performance, food and family-friendly fun.

Last year, Centre Stage drew thousands of visitors, lifted footfall by 30%, and gave local businesses an immediate boost – hospitality up 20 - 45%, retail up 10 - 30%, and the Museum of Richmond recording its highest visitor numbers.

Councillor Katie Mansfield, Lead Member for Richmond Town Centre, said: "Centre Stage brings people back onto the high street.

"Last year proved that when we use George Street and Whittaker Square in a more creative way, the town buzzes, local businesses see the benefit and our community comes together.

"This year we're building on what worked, with more opportunities for traders, local artists and activities for residents of all ages."

Centre Stage 2026 will feature:

  • Live music, street performers, workshops and skateable art
  • Family activities and an independent makers market
  • Food stalls from local traders
  • Richmond Myths, a new pop-up performance, running from Friday 17 to Sunday 19 July, reimagining legendary tales in shops, historic buildings and unexpected corners of the town.

Event partner, Tom Littler, Artistic Director and Joint Chief Executive of the Orange Tree, said: "Centre Stage: Richmond Myths will celebrate and enable many strands of local artistry, from music to dance to drama.

"At the Orange Tree, we're delighted to be bringing so many organisations together, and to partner with Richmond Council, HemingwayDesign, and RichmondBID to curate this remarkable weekend of festivities and creativity.

"It is great to see Richmond Council leading the way nationally: an investment in culture is always repaid, not just financially but in the wellbeing and happiness of communities."

Councillor Gareth Roberts, Leader of Richmond Council, added: "Residents have been clear – they want a high street full of life and activity. Centre Stage delivers exactly that, right in the heart of Richmond.

"And after such a strong first year, building on that success is the right next step."

Traders, artists and volunteers who wish to be involved in the event can register soon. To find out more, contact [email protected].

Practical information for residents and businesses, including road closures, access and servicing, will follow.

The full programme will be released in June.
