A train has struck an object in the Walton-on-Thames area at around 5:50am today, 4 March.

Passengers onboard the Woking to London Waterloo service have been evacuated while surrounding lines have been blocked while rail operators investigate the incident.

There have been no reported injuries from the collision with the unidentified object.

A Network Rail spokesman has said "early investigations show the front wheels of the train are derailed".

South Western Rail has indicated that services in the surrounding area such as those around Kingston and Teddington will be affected for the rest of the day.

This comes after a rail fare increase of nearly 5% yesterday (3 March), which applies to all regulated rail fares across England and Wales.

Unregulated fares continue to be set by rail companies, and include first-class, off-peak day, advance and anytime tickets.

This does not apply to fares across London's TfL network, which has frozen its pay-as-you-go prices for bus, tram, Tube, DLR, London Overground and Elizabeth line journeys until 2025.

Some national rail services around the capital will also be subject to TfL's new trial of a Friday off-peak period, which runs until 31 May 2024.
