New, Simpler Recycling changes are coming to Teddington
By Tilly O'Brien 11th Mar 2026
From the end of March, the government's Simpler Recycling legislation comes into effect. These national changes are designed to make recycling more consistent across the country, including in Teddington.
As part of the changes, you can now recycle even more items in your mixed recycling container (your black box or bin).
Cartons such as Tetra Paks should now be flattened and placed in your black box or bin, not put in your paper recycling.
You can now recycle the following additional items in your mixed recycling:
- Aluminium tubes (for example empty tomato paste or purée tubes)
- Plastic tubes (for example empty toothpaste tubes)
The new items are in addition to the items you can already recycle in your black box/bin, including:
- Plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays
- Glass bottles and jars
- Food tins and drink cans
- Empty aerosol cans
- Aluminium foil and trays (flattened, clean and free from food)
By making sure items are clean, empty and placed in the correct container, you're helping recycling to be processed efficiently.
Speaking about the new legislation, Richmond Council said: "Every item in the correct bin, box or caddy makes a difference and helps us keep the borough cleaner, greener and more sustainable for everyone."
You can Sign up to the council's waste and recycling mailing list for local service updates and details of your next Mega Skip Day.
The council added: "Thank you to all our residents who are recycling correctly. Your efforts are making a real difference by helping to reduce residual waste, protect the environment and keep the borough clean and green."
