A hole in the middle of the Petersham Road in Ham, which has forced a road closure for days, has triggered anger among residents.

The hole appeared between Sandy Lane and Ham Street on Thursday last week and appears to be linked to a burst main.

Thames Water was alerted and, initially, told the Council that emergency repairs would be completed by Friday, November 4.

However, the hole remained unrepaired across the weekend and, for much of the time, there was no evidence of any workmen on the site.

The chaos is one of a series of recent jams and disruption linked to Thames Water. Over the weekend, much of Hampton Hill was brought to a standstill by a burst water main.

Two weeks ago, the failure of temporary traffic lights around works by the company at the busy junction between King Street and London Road, in the centre of Twickenham, caused hours of jams.

The Petersham Road in Ham is used by thousands of commuters, as well as buses, every day as it is one of the main arteries between Richmond and Kingston.

One Petersham resident told Nub News: "Closing the Petersham Road has caused massive disruption in the area since last week and I find it incomprehensible that there seems to be no urgency to fix the problem, with no one apparently working at the site and no updated information provided to residents about progress.

"As of Monday night, a sign at the site promised the work would be finished that day. That clearly didn't happen and there was no sign of activity last weekend."

And demanded answers from Thames Water about the delay in repairing the 'Ham Hole'.

"No work being done this morning. It's the only direct road connecting Richmond to Kingston. Local diversions causing mahoosive jams in the evenings after Richmond Park closes," she said.

Another said: "Complete traffic chaos in Ham. The diversion via Ham Street is not well thought through with large buses, coaches, trucks etc trying to get through."
