Twickenham MP Munira Wilson, has today called on Conservative MPs 'to do the right thing' and remove Boris Johnson as prime minister in this evening's confidence vote.

Conservative MPs will hold a confidence vote between 18.00 - 20.00 after Sir Graham Brady, the chairman of the 1922 Committee, announced the threshold of the 15 per cent needed to trigger a vote of no confidence had been reached.

Responding to the announcement, Ms Wilson said: "Tonight is the moment of truth for Conservative MPs. They must do the right thing and sack Boris Johnson once and for all.

"Too much precious time has already been wasted with internal squabbles in the Conservative Party, and we can't have any more of this nonsense. With a cost of living crisis at home and a war in Europe, we need strong leadership we can trust.

"This past weekend, the British public spilled onto the streets in a great show of patriotism to honour Her Majesty the Queen for her Platinum Jubilee celebrations. The Queen's unerring sense of duty sets an example for all of us. It is time to restore the same respect, integrity and sense of duty to the office of the Prime Minister."

Pressure on Mr Johnson has been mounting following a report by Sue Gray last month highlighting Covid-rule breaking in Downing Street during the pandemic.

There has also been unhappiness within the party over tax rises and the government's response to the rising living costs.

To stay in office, the PM will need to secure support of at least 50% of all Tory MP votes plus one, totalling 180.

If successful, Mr Johnson will be protected from another no-confidence ballot for a year, however it is believed a marginal victory could still lead to the Conservative leader stepping down if he believes his Parliamentary backing is weak.

Mr Johnson's predecessor, Theresa May, won a no-confidence vote by 200-117 votes in December 18. However, she announced her resignation six months later.
