Sarina Wiegman's side have enjoyed a return to Teddington's riverside resort The Lensbury over the last few days.

The Lionesses returned to south west London in preparation for last night's showdown against Australia, hoping that the base, which provided a lucky charm to their victorious Euro 2022 campaign, would inspire good fortunes again on the pitch against the 2023 World Cup hosts.

Unfortunately, it was not meant to be, as England succumbed to a 2-0 defeat at Brentford's Gtech Community Stadium courtesy of goals either side of half-time from Sam Kerr and Charlotte Grant.

Despite the disappointing evening which brought an end to the Lionesses remarkable 30-game unbeaten run under Wiegman, the England coach treated it as a learning curve and insisted she is not worried the loss will halt their momentum ahead of this summer's World Cup.

Speaking after defeat to the Matildas, Wiegman said: "It doesn't feel great. It's a big learning game against a very physical, well-organised, good defending Australia.

"I'm not worried. I don't worry very easily. We know we have to be at our top level. Every game we've had some warnings. Against Brazil we had some warnings, against the Czech Republic we needed to create a little more, that was a warning. I don't think that we're losing momentum, it's building, it's 100 days to go and everyone is really excited to go to Australia. It's just a really big learning moment for us."

The Lensbury has become a base for many elite sports teams in recent years including the England's Men Rugby Team, and the Lionesses followed suite in the summer of 2022 as they propelled their way to European glory.

Following a £1.2 million investment in 2019, The Lensbury boasts two UEFA sized pitches, 22 tennis courts, an elite level heated indoor pool with advanced thermal suites, state-of-the-art gyms, massage rooms, ice baths and a water sports centre with direct access to the Thames.

Despite last night's disappointment, there can be no doubt the Teddington resort holds a special place in the heart of the Lionesses squad and that they will be back prior to their World Cup campaign which kicks off in Australia this summer.
