Kingston and Surbiton MP Ed Davey predicts the country will be heading to the polls in March, Nub News can disclose.

The Lib Dem leader said he thinks the election will happen "sooner rather than later".

In a meeting with Nub News Thursday morning, Davey said: "Having worked with the I've never known [the Conservatives] so divided and chaotic. This close to an election and they're split five ways."

During the coalition government with then PM David Cameron, Ed Davey was Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change (2012-2015).

Davey added: "[The Conservatives] are so divided it's quite difficult for them to hold together.

"If they try to oust [Rishi Sunak] he will go straight to the polls."

The prime minister is by far the least popular member of his cabinet, with an approval rating of -25.4, according to Conservative Home.

With 'Vote Liberal Democrats' signs peppered throughout the leader's Berrylands office, this is a party with its finger on the electoral trigger.

Davey's speculation comes as the Labour announced Kingston and Surbiton is a "non-battleground" for the party.

The Lib Dems currently have 15 seats in parliament after suffering losses in the 2019 general election.
