It's never too late to pick up a new skill and it's never too early to think about New Year's resolutions!

Try a bookmaking course at the Landmark Arts Centre this January and discover a new way to practise mindfulness, harness your creativity and gain a skill.

Workshop tutor Gill Smith said: "Learning how to make your own notebooks is very rewarding. We start off the sessions with the simplest of structures …and by the end of the four weeks participants will have learned how to make four or five different books."

Open to all Adults (18+) – no experience is required to have a go. However, it is advised participants should be confident using sharp objects such as needles and scalpels.

"I love teaching these beginners' sessions to see how much participants enjoy creating something they've never done before," Gill said. "And after only a few sessions their confidence has grown so much."

"I have a lovely group who have continued with me after they started with these beginner sessions at The Landmark. They are now quite expert and making pretty complicated stuff!"

Classes take place 6:30-9pm every Monday in January (8, 15, 22, 29). Book your place here

Here's an idea of the bookmaking schedule|:

Week 1

• How to fold & manipulate paper for bookmaking using specialist bookmaking tools

• Making a simple folded notebook (no sticking or sewing)

• Making a simple pamphlet with laminated covers

Week 2

• Making a double section pamphlet with integrated cover & optional pocket

Week 3

• Making a simple stab binding notebook

Week 4

• Making a concertina book with hard cover

Materials

All materials will be provided and specialist bookmaking tools will be available for use in class each week.

However, each participant should bring the following:

– an A3 cutting mat (smaller ones will be available to use, but your own A3 mat is preferable)

– a metal safety ruler (the best are either cork backed or in a 'w' shape which provide a finger guard when cutting with a scalpel)

– a clip point shoe knife (we'll be cutting paper to size in class so this is a paper knife for tearing the folded pages)
