The latest proposals for the site on Teddington High Street previously belonging to HSBC have been revealed.
Since the bank closed its Teddington branch back in 2016, the site has remained unoccupied with previous plans rejected by Richmond Council's Planning Committee in May 2021.
First submitted in April 2019, the initial proposals included a restaurant and eight residential units but were met with an outpour of opposition from residents concerned that the development was simply too large, not fitting with the high street's current architecture and disregarded a series of community concerns.
Despite the opposition, locals welcomed development but in a manner 'considering current residents and its impact on Teddington High Street which is a conservation area', stated in a petition launched at the time.
As part of the latest consultation, Chandler Browne Architects sent the updated plans to residents and local businesses via a newsletter, and shared them in meetings with local councillors and the Teddington Society.
An open consultation was hosted at the site yesterday (Wednesday) where members of the public were able to view the new proposals for the first time.
Chandler Browne Architects have claimed the new proposals, consisting of a mixture of one and two-bed homes (eight in total) above a designated retail space, have been 'designed to complement the existing architecture of the conservation area'. It also states the 'design of the building is in keeping with the main row on the High Street, adopting features to continue the flow of the buildings from the other side of the neighbouring Teddington Arms.
It also states that the elevation on Cedar Road (adjoining the site) has been designed to complement the terraced houses along the street, 'providing a connection with the High Street at the corner before dropping down to match the neighbouring residential buildings'.
Chandler Browne alongside their advisors Cascade, will now review the feedback received by residents, community groups and local businesses before proceeding with an official planning application this summer.
Unico Developments are the current owners of the site, who plan to keep the new building and rent out the properties. No allocated parking will be provided for the flats if the plans are approved.
