Last chance to submit views on Teddington allotment repurposing proposals

The deadline to submit your views on the proposed repurposing of the allotments on Shacklegate Lane in Teddington for the expansion of Teddington Cemetery is tomorrow (Thursday, 2 October).
The proposals for the allotment have been revealed in a planning application which seeks permission for the "Change of use from allotments to cemetery use, including soft landscaping and associated works".
The application has already received eight objections from local residents who will miss having the allotments as they are one of few in Teddington and have been there for around 100 years.
Speaking about the allotments, one resident who protests "strongly" about the proposals, said: "They are a cultural benefit to the very many who, like us, live close but not actually a neighbour, but who walk very regularly through the cemetery."
The Teddington Society has also expressed its objections to the proposals, stating: " The allotments are one of few open spaces in Teddington and have been enjoyed for around 100 years.
"In recent years the Council has allowed the space to be run down and has prevented new applicants from taking over the unused plots.
"The Council wish to take over the site for burials and they estimate that that it will be used up in about 30 years.
"The Council's own data indicates that there is a much unmet demand for allotments - there is a long waiting list for plots (around 3,500 requests).
"The loss of the Shacklegate Lane will mean that current holders may be offered alternative plots elsewhere, but the Council haven't considered the needs of holders and the value of having such a valuable local space nearby."
A spokesperson for Richmond Council told Nub News: "We understand how important the allotments are to our community and to those who have cared for them over the years. While there is an urgent need to reclaim this land for burial space, we are committed to working closely with all plot holders to support them through this transition.
"Richmond Council recognises the disruption this may cause and is dedicated to helping allotment holders find suitable alternative plots at other sites wherever possible, following the guidance of the National Allotment Society to ensure fairness and support.
"We value the community spirit that allotments foster, and we are exploring ways to maintain growing opportunities within the reclaimed area, such as community raised beds, to continue supporting local gardeners and groups."
Residents have until 2 October to submit their views on the proposals.
