A LANE on Hampton Court Bridge is now closed to cars, cyclists and pedestrians so that anti-terror bollards and a raised kerb can be installed.
The left-most lane taking traffic from East Molesey to Hampton Court had barriers placed around it today (24 January) as work began on the safety measures.
The works will last for three months and construction will take place on one side of the bridge at a time so that pedestrians and cyclists can still use the crossing.
Anti-terror measures were approved by Elmbridge Borough Council last month.
The bridge was identified as a potential site for a terrorist attack following incidents on London bridges in 2017 and its location near tourist attraction Hampton Court Palace.
The bridge's partial closure today comes a week after South Western Railway (SWR) slashed train services on Shepperton branch stations, including Hampton.
The cuts, which SWR say have been brought about by covid-related absences, have left the stations with just one train per hour to central London.
There are fears that this could lead to even more traffic on the roads around Hampton Court Bridge, increasing the risks of lengthy queues in either direction.
Twitter user Tracy Fraser warned of "carnage" in the area.
Replying to a tweet by Twickenham MP Munira Wilson she said: "So children will struggle to get to school along with staff and commuters too.
"Appalling decision by @SW_Help with very short notice.
"Hampton Court Bridge is having 3 month roadworks commencing 24/1- it will be carnage only the Hampton area."
Surrey County Council admitted the closure would cause some disruption in a Q&A on its website.
The authority said: "Works are required to prevent issues caused if an errant vehicle mounted the pavement.
"The measures will protect the bridge from potential structural damage and offers protection to the public in the event of vehicle attack by terrorists.
"The lane closures required to provide a safe working area for the workforce, materials and equipment means that there will be some disruption."
