Knights, rivalry and royal drama: Henry VIII’s Joust to return to Hampton Court Palace
By Tilly O'Brien 2nd Jun 2026
This summer, Hampton Court Palace will be transported back to the Tudor times with the return of Henry VIII's Joust, bringing the pomp and pageantry of courtly competition to the Tudor palace.
On 11 - 12 and 18 - 19 July, visitors are invited to step back in time to 1526, as rival knights clash on horseback and courtly drama unfolds in the world of a Tudor joust tournament.
As squires scramble to armour the King and banners fly in bold house colours, the day will spin into a whirlwind of action with the pounding of hooves and clashing of lances.
As the tournament unfolds, tensions - and comedy - build when it's discovered that Anne Boleyn has not been formally invited, culminating in a court-rousing final showdown where audiences can call for the deciding last run.
Guided by a quick-witted chronicler, spectators of all ages can immerse themselves in the spirit and showmanship of a Tudor joust, as they cheer for a side and offer favours to their chosen knight.
From playful courtly games to thrilling combat, this family-friendly event brings together daring stunts, comedic mischief and lively storytelling for a spectacular return to the era of Henry VIII's court.
Alongside the joust, visitors can witness breathtaking falconry displays led by expert handlers, who will showcase these magnificent birds of prey while sharing insights about their significance in Tudor life.
All performances are open-air and seated directly on grass, so dressing appropriately for the weather on the day is recommended. Visitors are also welcomed to bring their own picnic blanket or folding chair to enjoy the performances and relax in the gardens.
Entrance to Henry VIII's Joust is included in standard admission to Hampton Court Palace. Visitors can refuel from the tournament rush by grabbing a tasty treat from the ringside food and drink stalls, or sit down at the Tiltyard Café for a break.
Additionally, the merriment will continue throughout the grounds – little ones can adventure through 60 acres of historic gardens, run wild in the Magic Garden or brave the world's oldest puzzle maze, before exploring one of Britain's most iconic palaces.
