Kingston Road is partly closed as engineers tackle a sinkhole that opened up yesterday afternoon (January 4) in Teddington, with the timeline for the repair works currently 'unconfirmed'.

Closures are currently in place between Ferry Road and Kingston roundabout with diversions also established. Residents have been encouraged to seek alternative routes to avoid heavy traffic.

Whilst the road is still open for pedestrians, the closure is set to cause significant disruptions for commuters and local school children who already face difficulties with this week's South Western Railway train strikes.

Southbound traffic is being diverted at the junction of Ferry Road and Kingston Road whilst traffic Northbound is being diverted at Kingston Roundabout onto Hampton Court Road and via Church Grove.

Side streets such as Fairfax, St Marks and Broom Road are also suffering from overwhelming diverted traffic and busses.

Bus routes 281 and 285 towards Kingston are on diversion via Ferry Road, Broom Road and Normansfield Avenue and will be unable to serve stops from 'Marston Road' (P) to 'Fairfax Road' (E).

Routes 281 and 285 towards Teddington are on diversion via Hampton Court Road, Church Grove, Park Road, Sandy Lane and Park Road and will be unable to serve stops from 'Lower Teddington Road' (A) to 'Elmfield Avenue.

Informing locals of the sinkhole, Richmond Police wrote on Twitter: "Road closures in place in Kingston Road, junction Holmesdale Road #Teddington after call to sinkhole opened up around 16:00hrs today, 4 Jan. Closures likely to be in place for a few days. Pls avoid area/ use alternative routes."

Richmond Council added: "Kingston Rd TW11 is closed between Ferry Rd and Kingston Roundabout, due to a suspected sink hole. Diversions are in place - please consider alternative routes to avoid heavy traffic. Engineers will examine the site tomorrow. We'll update asap."
