Gyms and leisure centres stay shut

Gyms and leisure centres will NOT be joining in the celebrations on Super Saturday, July 4, as they will remain shut on government orders.

They have not been given the green light to re-open so Better Gym, Teddington and Teddington Sports Centre will have to keep their doors shut for the time being.

Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden has suggested a date of 'mid-July' to reopen gyms but no official date has been confirmed and will depend on the success of the easing.

Teddington Sports Centre said: "Following the government's latest announcement our Borough Sport and Fitness Centre remains closed.

"In line with the guidance we do not have an agreed timeline for reopening any of the centres."

Swimming pools are also set to remain closed for some time to come.

This means that Teddington Swimming Club will not be getting back in the water just yet - a decision that Olympic Champion Adam Peaty has called 'disappointing and frustrating.'

The CEO of Swim England, Jane Nickerson, also expressed her dismay on Twitter.

She said: "Waiting to hear about leisure opening and still no mention of swimming pools.

"Is it easier to manage social distancing in clean, chlorinated pools with ticketed, controlled access with disciplined people, or groups imbibing alcohol in pubs @BorisJohnson?"

Gyms and pools have not been allowed to reopen on Super Saturday due to being 'close proximity venues.'

A government taskforce is set to be established to investigate the best way in reopening these venues.
