Grand Finale - Teddington Tipster reviews last day at Royal Ascot
BY THE TEDDINGTON TIPSTER (Nick Luck)
It's been a pretty rewarding Royal Ascot on the whole, but - after this column's Thursday heroics - we were brought down to earth pretty readily yesterday. I can only apologise if you joined the party a bit late and found only a warm glass of Liebfraumilch and a shrivelled cocktail sausage. One last chance to get among the winners, and end the week with chest puffed out and ready to face citizens of TW11.
12.40 - Silver Wokingham Handicap
Truth be told, I like Aplomb here - he's got a career best at this track, will appreciate a return to six furlongs and will be fitter for his recent run. He's my idea of the likeliest winner, but his price has evaporated and I will also be backing Dirty Rascal each way. I am a big fan of his capable young trainer, think he has more to offer and is a big price.
1.15 Queen Mary Stakes
I was at Sandown last Saturday when Happy Romance won and, for all she only had one serious rival to beat, she couldn't have been more impressive. She's a big, powerful unit who should cope fine with the testing ground and I think she represents a bit of value against the favourites.
1.50 Coventry Stakes
There have been few two year olds who have impressed me more this season than Qaader. He could not have been more professional on his Newbury debut, looking for all the world a future star. His rider has been on fire this week, and can bag himself a seventh winner.
2.25 Coronation Stakes
I find this one of the hardest puzzles of the week. I would be very interested in the American-trained filly, Sharing, but I am worried this is the softest ground she has encountered. In the end, I've plumped for Run Wild, who was a late entry into this trace, but whose stable are in irresistible form. She might dominate this from the front.
3.00 St James's Palace Stakes
The race of the week, with three star three year old colts in attendance. I am staying loyal to last season's brilliant champion two year old, Pinatubo. He is a very laid back colt who may just have needed his reappearance to put the edge on him, and can reverse the form with Wichita.
3.35 Diamond Jubilee Stakes
Another tricky little number. Sceptical could be a superstar, but he is unproven at this level and faces a very different test today. This is a hunch play, but I think that Khaadem might be the answer. At Goodwood last season, he showed real brilliance, and his trainer thinks he is right up there with the best he has trained. When you consider that he has trained Battaash and Muharaar, that is high praise, and he might be best caught fresh.
4.10 Wokingham Stakes
A brutally competitive handicap, but my two against the field here are Tinto, whose stable has started the season in great form, and No Nonsense, a slightly more speculative choice who is the apple of his veteran trainer's eye.
4.40 Queen Alexandra Stakes
An uninspiring edition of this marathon finale can go to Who Dares Wins, a splendid old warhorse whose trainer has had a week to remember.
