Read on for the February highlights as Teddington School kickstarts 2023 in style.

Bugsy Malone production a roaring success

After months of rehearsal time, 150 students took part from Year 7 to Year 13 in the school's production of Bugsy Malone from Tuesday 31 January to Friday 3rd February.

Commenting on the productions remarkable success, Teddington School's Drama Teacher, Ms K Jenkinson, said: "The students put in hours upon hours of hard work and in the end that really paid off. It was a pleasure to see how they bonded as a team, supported each other, coached and mentored each other across the two casts, celebrating each other's achievements.

"It's amazing to see the commitment and dedication the students put in for the pure fun of it all. We also had ex-students who came back to support with the show."

She continued: "The students did us proud and really encompassed what it means to be part of a production. For me it is about inclusion: if you want to be involved you're in. It's a show run for the students by the students and it's everything I love about being a teacher."

Taiwanese Integration Programme

February has also seen 33 students from Taiwan welcomed to the Teddington School community.

Whilst at Teddington, the Taiwanese students attended four TEDdington TALKS, watched the Bugsy Malone performance and participated in a range of Key Stage 4 and five lessons.

The visit provided students with an insightful comparison of cultural differences in education and a classic game of football concluded the two-week visit.

Wanted! Parent volunteers for 1:1 reading programme

In September 2021, Teddington School launched a catch-up reading programme for students who joined in Year 7 with low reading ages.

The community-focused programme is supported by parents, teaching assistants and 6th form students, who work with one student, twice a week, listening to them read for 15-20 minutes.

Currently, the school is in need of more adults to join the programme and is calling on parents to get involved.

Parent volunteers will receive a short training session before starting to work with one student, listening to them read twice a week for 15-20 minutes between 8:35-9:00am

The school is looking for parents who are prepared to commit to the initiative for a minimum of 6 weeks, and ideally a full 12-week term.

School's sporting stars shine

Year 11 student, Elodie Osmand, plays for Elmbridge Eagles Rugby League during the summer season (April - August) and has recently been voted the most improved player for her age group for 2022.

Elodie was invited to No 10 Downing Street to provide a Rugby League skills demonstration during the recent Rugby League World Cup and was then invited to attend an England Girls' Junior Rugby League International pathway skills training day at St Mary's University, where she received coaching and support from Junior England International Rugby League coaches and also the London Broncos Women's Rugby League team coach.

Former Rugby League International player/coach and current Elmbridge Club Head Coach, Kevin Rudd, said: "The Club and all her Club coaches are really proud of Elodie and her achievements in being invited to attend an International player pathway event where she performed really well and will have learned much.

"She has displayed tremendous courage, commitment, skill and determination – we wish her every success for the future."

Switching attention to tennis, this month has also seen Brooke Black in Year 10 compete in the Liverpool Junior 2023 tennis tournament, run by the International Tennis Federation (ITF).

Brooke struck gold winning two doubles ITF titles and looks set to ignite a flourishing tennis career!

Year 11 student Tommy Evans has also been selected to represent London at the English Schools Swimming Association (ESSA) Inter Divisional Championships, which this year is being held in Coventry in March.

Nub News wishes Tommy the best of luck!
