An architect who helped design a riding stables in Teddington has been shortlisted for a prestigious award.

Damian Jakubek from Architecture WK has been shortlisted for Royal Institute of British Architects' (RIBA) Stephen Lawrence Award 2026 for the work he did on Park Lane Stables (PLS).

RIBA's description of PLS reads: "Following the expiry of a property lease held by a much loved local charity a project brief was born.

"The core requirement was to re-purpose the ancillary ground floor flat, developed in the 1980s, to provide welcoming visitor facilities to include a community space with 'cuddle horse' stall, a private consultation room and an accessible WC within a thermally upgraded and serviced space.

"Park Lane Stables RDA provides horse riding opportunities for disabled children and adults.

"With a local fundraising endeavour going national, the Local Council locally spot listed the premises, the freehold was purchased, with the proprietor and charity team working together.

"The premises comprised a dilapidated collection of small-scale structures, featuring both stables and service accommodation for staff and volunteers, and including ancillary residential space and elements of historic fabric dating back to its use as an 1830s fire station with attendant stabling.

"The redevelopment project has now provided upgraded stabling, staff facilities and community spaces with stabling for nine horses."

Speaking about Damian's shortlisting, a PLS spokesperson told Nub News: "There are just six shortlisted projects from across the whole country so we're thrilled for him.

"The prize is awarded at the main Stirling Prize Award later in the year."

Jakubek's colleague at Architecture WK, Sam Kamleh, added: ""We're incredibly proud of Damian for his work with Architecture:WK and on Park Lane Stables RDA.

"Damian joined us after his Masters in Architecture and seeing his progression from a a graduate to a thoughtful, capable and talented architect has been one of the practice's most important achievements.

"In a small practice such as ours, it is an honour to be able to acknowledge a young architect who has become indispensable to the practice, especially in memory of Stephen Lawrence. We know that Damian will continue to thrive in his architectural career."

The other five projects shortlisted for the prize include Notting Hill and Ealing High School Junior School, Oru Sutton, The Apple House, The Buttermarket, and Walled Garden at Auckland Castle.

Kamleh won the RIBA London Award 2026 back in May for her work on PLS and is helping Architecture WK with its "visionary plan" for the site of the former Teddington Police Station.

PLS is also currently fundraising to save one of its therapy pony's eyes.
