EXCLUSIVE: Teddington resident launches petition against increase in vape shops on High Street
By Tilly O'Brien 29th May 2026
A Teddington resident, who will be referred to as Ms X, has launched a petition against the increasing number of vape shops opening on High Street.
The petition comes after a vape shop replaced Cavan Bakery last month - an opening that received objections from Teddington Society.
In an exclusive onterview with Nub News, Ms X said: "We oppose the letting of shops to businesses that are not suitable for our beautiful family high street. Our community is built around families, children, and independent local businesses that promote a healthy and welcoming environment.
"Estate agents and landlords have a responsibility to consider the impact their decisions have on the character of our high street and the wellbeing of the community. We ask them to support businesses that strengthen, rather than undermine, the family-friendly nature of our town centre."
The petition, entitled 'Help Preserve the Character and Safety of Teddington High Street, was launched this morning (Friday, 29 May).
It reads: "As a long-time resident of Teddington, I have seen our community grow and thrive as a family-friendly environment, full of charm and character that attracts families and independent businesses alike.
"However, recent developments threaten the integrity and atmosphere of our beloved high street.
"Sneller Commercial, a local agency, has recently rented out a shop space to a vape store right next to a children's dance studio and within our prized Golden Triangle, where family cafes, restaurants, and food stores reside.
"This choice not only impacts the atmosphere, but also raises concerns about the appropriateness of the businesses chosen to surround spaces frequented by children and families.
"Teddington High Street is cherished for its independent businesses, which contribute to the unique community spirit.
"Having a vape store so close to establishments that cater to our children and family-friendly venues seems unthoughtful and not in accordance with what the community stands for.
"Statistics have shown that exposure to vape products and marketing can influence younger audiences, potentially normalizing a habit that can have health repercussions.
"According to a study by the National Health Service (NHS), areas with increased vape store density have seen a rise in youth experimenting with these products.
"For the benefit of our community, we propose that Richmond Council implement stricter zoning regulations that prioritize the needs of our community, ensuring businesses align with the family-friendly atmosphere and support local independent businesses.
"Additionally, community consultations should be mandated before approving new retail tenants, providing residents and business owners a say in preserving the character of our high street.
"We need your support to protect Teddington's community values and maintain the integrity of our high street.
"By signing this petition, you are advocating for thoughtful planning that respects the fabric of our community and provides a safe environment for families to thrive.
"Help us keep Teddington High Street a place where families and independent businesses flourish. Sign this petition today to make a difference."
