A phone repair and vape shop is set to replace a bakery chain on Teddington's High Street.

Fone and Vape will replace Cavan Bakery, which closed last month (April) after being located at 25 High Street for 17 years due to renewal difficulties with the building's landlord.

Staff of the new shop told Nub News that they expect to open in a couple of weeks.

They added that converting a bakery into a phone repair and vape shop "has been very difficult".

However, the conversion has faced some local opposition.

Speaking about its opposition, Teddington Society said: "There are two strands to this - one is stopping the visual deterioration of the High Street and our conservation areas by the conversion of the front of the shops using cheap and garish materials.

"The other is the limiting of shops such as 'phone and vape' type shops as there are already three in Broad Street.

"The Society has already put in an application to Richmond Council's planning enforcement about the fascia and have had an acknowlegement that they will investigate."

It continued: "The main reasons are the unacceptablility of the material and lighting of the new fascia in a conservation area, the proximity to a Grade II listed building and the non complaince with the Council's Shopfronts Supplementary Planning Guidance.

"The other issue is a new phone and vape shop on the High Street - our prime conservation area. It's all part of the general deterioration of the High Street in particular and our retail streets in general.

"We have already had messages from members about the proximity of a vape shop to Awesome Studios, which a lot of children use."

The real issue here is the real estate market. Owners wanting more and more - using inflation and costs as excuses - and ending up taking shorter term leases. Look at the same issue in Twickenham which has become a wasteland of vape shops, barbers and other effluent. The same thing will happen here and then in Hampton Hill - where it has already begun. But your country has no plan to solve this problem. Real estate is such a terrible mess in the UK.
