No new deaths in past week, council leader says in Covid-19 update
Go straight home after the pub closes at 10pm is the message from Richmond Council leader Gareth Roberts.
In his weekly update to the borough, Mr Roberts gives an update on the number of Covid-19 cases and tests that have been carried out.
He also urges people to download the new government app and to maintain good hygiene practices.
You can watch the two-minute video above or read a transcript of it below.
Hello, these are the latest Covid-19 statistics for Richmond upon Thames. Over the last seven days we have identified 22 new cases of the virus in the borough, bringing the total number of cases identified since March 2020 to 756.
There have been no new deaths directly linked to Covid-19 over the last seven days, therefore since February the total number of deaths in the borough that have directly been linked to Covid-19 stands at 153.
Over the last seven days we have tested 1,590 people and there has been a positive return rate on those tests of 1.1%.
The discrepancy between the positive return rate, the number of tests conducted and the number of cases identified is explained by people being tested more than once.
You will have seen new measures being announced by the Prime Minister and by the Mayor of London all designed to curb the spread of the virus over the last few days, and perhaps the most eye-catching of them was that pubs, bars and restaurants must close at 10pm. That's closing, not last orders, not drinking up, closing.
What we want to avoid is a return to the scenes that we saw over the summer, when people took the opportunity to instead use the parks and open spaces as open air drinking areas.
So, please, if you are leaving pubs, clubs and bars at the 10pm, please do consider going straight home.
It's also vital that if you have a smartphone that you download the NHS tracing app, and tap in at places such as hair salons, nail bars, restaurants, bars, pubs, clubs, all of the places where people mingle so that we can ensure that we are using the data to control the spread of the virus.
And, of course, we have to keep following the rules with which we have become familiar:
- Washing our hands wherever possible
- Wearing a face mask or covering on public transport, in shops, supermarkets or other closed public spaces
- Maintaining social distance of two metres
- Maintaining the rule of six – no more than six people gathering indoors or outdoors.
