Richmond Council have received a grant of more than £220,000 to fund the planting of 410 new trees in the borough.

The money comes from the government's Urban Tree Challenge Fund and helps in line with Richmond's Climate Emergency Strategy.

The scheme provides councils with funding towards the costs of planting new trees and ensuring their establishment during the trees' first three years of growth.

The funding will support the planting of 410 trees over the next year in areas that have a canopy cover of under 20%.

Through this funding the cost of buying and planting new trees along with the costs of protection, weeding and watering is covered.

A significant number of the trees will be planted during the current tree planting season with the remains planting to be completed in Spring 2023.

Cllr Julia Neden-Watts, Chair of the Environment, Sustainability, Culture and Sports Services Committee, said:

"Tree planting remains a key component of Richmond's Climate Emergency Strategy. I am delighted that we have been successful in our application for funding which will ensure that we continue to add to the numbers of new trees being planted in the borough.

"These new trees are being planted in areas identified by our Parks Team as having limited canopy cover currently and will therefore have a significant impact and help mitigate the effects of climate change."
