Over 1000 local people have already signed a petition urging road closures at the weekend to allow cafes and restaurants to provide outdoor tables and chairs and help businesses get back on their feet.

The petition to Richmond Council carries a headline saying:"Support local restaurants and cafes - 'close the high street' weekends for outdoor eating" and includes a photo of High Street, Teddington.

Launched on the petition website change.org by Stefanie Wedge, from Teddington, it states:

"I want to support the restaurants and cafes in our local area get back up and running, by allowing them to use road space for outdoor tables and chairs over a weekend.

"Many do not have outdoor spaces so this is a way to allow them to get an income again, whilst also allowing the locals to enjoy eating out - whilst socially distancing.

"We need to support our local community and economy!"
