Chess tournament finishes in style

A crowd gathers for Teddington School's highly-anticipated Chess Final

Since January, pupils across all years have been involved in a school chess tournament taking place in the library at break.

Friday, March 10th saw the tournament reach a thrilling climax with a crowd gathering to see Gleb from Year 10 and Avyukth from Year 8 battle it out for the coveted first prize.

In a hard-thought contest, Gleb cast the decisive check-mate and brought an end to a fascinating three-month competition.

Sixth former shines in second round of Physics Olympiad

Following on from his recent outstanding success in the first round of the British Physics Olympiad, in which he achieved a "Top Gold" award, Year 13 Physics student, Richard Paterson, was invited to take part in the second round of the competition along with about 100 of the very brightest Physics students in the country.

Richard achieved a thoroughly commendable silver award in the further competition and achieved a bronze award for the Astrophysics competition despite never studying the subject!

The future is bright for the year 13 student who sets his sights on the Jesus College in Oxford from September.

Mr Evans of Teddington School's Science Department said: "As well as Richard's remarkable success, we have recently had 38 Year 11 students take part in the Physics Olympiad Intermediate Challenge, and, for the first time ever, all students in our Year 12 Physics cohort (19 students) have taken part this week in the Physics Olympiad Senior Challenge.

"The questions in both of these competitions are of extremely high demand (beyond Grade 9 at GCSE for the Intermediate; beyond A* at A level for the Senior) and are designed to stretch students and to develop their problem solving skills. We look forward to seeing how our students have faired in these competitions, but all can be congratulated for accepting the challenge to take part."

National Science Week

Sticking with the school's Science Department, the month of March also saw National Science Week celebrated with an array of lunchtime sessions which included exploring solid carbon dioxide, generating electricity, skewering balloons and the Big Science Quiz.

Head of Science, Mr Taylor added: "The students were fantastically enthusiastic about getting involved in the sessions. Congratulations to Richard, Polly, Sam, Jamie and Charlie for their win in the Science Quiz!

"We were also lucky enough to welcome Andrew Hanson from the National Physical Laboratory for assemblies with Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 where he displayed the wonders of the temperature scale in a practical show using Liquid Nitrogen."

U16 Boys' Basketball Team represent Richmond at London Youth Games

The U16 Boys' Basketball team have had incredible success in the London Youth Games this season, representing Richmond.

Against the odds, as many of the key players in the team are in Year 10, they got as far as the quarter-finals.

In the final eight they faced St Mark's School in Hounslow. St Mark's had some talented Year 11 players, one of whom was close to 6'5 and it was a tough ask to progress to the semi-finals. Teddington put in a determined display, improving as the game progressed. Harvey Allen and Ronnie Armstrong top scored with 18 and 16 points respectively as Teddington succumbed to a 45-71 defeat.

If Teddington can win the borough tournament again next year, they will aim to reach the semi-finals and beyond!
