Brilliant local businesses make Teddington the best place to live in London
Teddington is the best place to live in London in 2021 because of its brilliant local businesses and high street, the Sunday Times has said.
The paper features a glowing tribute to TW11 as part of its prestigious Best Places to Live In The UK Awards, which are published in full this weekend.
"TW11 has a high street that nails the sweet spot between practical and aspirational, with unbeatable options of exercise outdoors," the paper said.
Cavan Bakery, Cafe Benedict and the Flying Cloud Cafe were singled out in the article as the best places to get a coffee and pastry.
The Fallow Deer was highlighted for its stunning lockdown menu, including homemade fishfingers in a brioche bap, and Shambles restaurant got a shout-out.
Continuing its praise of the high street, the paper said: "There is everything you need: the Good Wine Shop, named the best London neighbourhood wine shop in the 2020 Decanter Retailer awards; the Teddington Cheese Shop, selling 130 varieties online; as well as beauty salons; chemists; a Waterstones; and Teddington Essentials, where we dare you not to find what you need (and if it's not there it will be in Teddington Hardware).
"There is also a superior selection of homeware, boutiques and charity shops that fill in the gaps. The Refill Larder has moved to larger premises, and the chandlery by Teddington Lock keeps locals in ropes, bilge pumps and lifejackets, most of which are sported by paddleboarders on the Thames."
The piece also praised Teddington's community spirit and the leisure activities on offer.
A successful bid to save Park Lane Stableswhich saw the riding school raise £1 million was attributed to the generosity of locals.
Bushy Park was described as "the perfect pandemic playground" and bluebells in the woodland gardens featured on the piece's "Don't Miss" section.
The Lensbury Club, Awesome Studios and plans for a local cinema rounded off its leisure activities recap.
Resident Damian Wilson commented in the piece "there is more to it than meets the eye - there is something wonderfully unpretentious about it."
The article concluded: "You'll love living here if..you're looking for a community that nurtures, and the best nature in London."
Responding to the news, local MP Munira Wilson told Nub News: "I am not surprised Teddington has been named the best place to live in London.
"We are blessed with wonderful open spaces like Bushy Park, and access to the Thames river paths. Having places to walk, exercise or just sit and watch the world go by has never been more important than in the year just gone.
"Teddington also has a wonderful community sprit, which shone this year with the campaign to save the Park Lane Stables. Local people rallied around when this local facility for young disabled people was threatened.
"The businesses on our highstreet have adapted amazingly well to the challenges of moving to takeaway or online but we all look forward to the return of happy shoppers in April."
