Breaking: 16-year-old arrested over stabbing of Afghan refugee near Teddington

A 16-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of murdering an Afghan refugee in a stabbing near Teddington this week.

The boy was arrested today by officers investigating the death of Hazrat Wali, a student at Richmond College.

Wali, 18, was stabbed in broad daylight on a playing field in Twickenham on Tuesday afternoon.

The teenager described as "very caring" by friends later died of his wounds in hospital after efforts to save him by a teacher at the scene.

Police are now carrying out reassurance patrols at Richmond College and in the surrounding streets.

Children at who witnessed the attack are also being offered counselling by their school.

A post-mortem of Wali's body will take place at Kingston Mortuary tomorrow.

The Metropolitan Police said: "Police were called at 16:45hrs on Tuesday, 12 October to reports of a stabbing on a playing field in Craneford Way, Twickenham.

"Officers attended along with London Ambulance Service and found an 18-year-old man with stab injuries.

"He was taken to hospital, but was pronounced dead at 17:45hrs. He has since been named as Hazrat Wali, from Notting Hill.

"His family continue to be supported by specially trained officers."

Police are appealing for information on the attack and have set up a web-page where evidence can be uploaded.
