Bomb scare in Teddington - emergency services seal off roads and evacuate homes
A fragment of scrap metal is believed to have triggered a dramatic bomb scare in Teddington this afternoon.
Scores of uniformed police officers, police vehicles, emergency incident response units from the ambulance service and two fire crews were summoned to Kingston Road in the middle of the afternoon.
Local residents were informed it was a suspected unexploded Second World War bomb. It is understood the Bomb Squad were also at the scene.
Surrounding roads were cordoned off and guarded by the police for over two hours. Cromwell Road, Kingston Lane, Atbara Road, Munster Road, King Edwards Grove and St Winifred's Road were closed and taped off by police.
Hundreds of local residents were evacuated from nearby and were sitting on pavements in the scorching heat as police and bomb experts investigated the find. Sirens could be blaring heard for ten minutes as convoys of the emergency vehicles descended upon the area.
The home owner reported the discovery of a 'piece of metal' in his garden and called the police as a precaution.
The area was given the all clear at just after 5pm as the emergency services dispersed. One police officer said: "It's better to be safe than sorry."
Representatives from London Metropolitan Police later confirmed that although the discovery looked like a bomb, it was not a risk to the public.
A police spokesperson said: "The Metropolitan Police bomb disposal team have confirmed that although the item appeared to look like a bomb, it is not a bomb.
"Road closures are being lifted & local residents are being allowed back into their homes."
The local area was bombed heavily in the Second Wold War.
