The Royal Parks have reminded visitors to avoid bringing disposable barbecues when frequenting any of the eight parklands in and around London following incidents in both Bushy and Richmond park in recent weeks.

Parts of Bushy Park have been damaged following a bonfire, while some lizards were killed as a result of an accidental fire in Richmond Park.

Accidental fires caused by disposable barbecues during soaring temperatures can have disastrous consequences for wildlife, destroying veteran trees, annihilating wild-flower seed banks and harming or even killing birds and mammals.

Dennis Clarke, Head of Park Services for the Royal Parks said: "We understand the temptation to use beautiful green spaces for barbecues, but hot coals and dry grass don't mix. During the hot weather the hot grass in the parks is like tinder.

"No-one ever believes it'll be there barbecue that causes the fire, but fires can start easily and rapidly get out of control especially in the wilder, more secluded parks.

"Fires quickly become very dangerous and are a risk to visitors and wildlife. We ask everyone to respect the ban on barbecues, to keep visitors safe and to protect wildlife."

With several fires accidentally started in the Royal Parks every year by embers and ash falling from disposable barbecues, visitors have been urged to stick to picnics when taking in the beauty around them.
