UP CLOSE: With the family who took over management of a Teddington chippy
By Tilly O'Brien 19th Jul 2026
A chef from Germany, Ben, and his family have taken over the management of a chippy in Teddington.
The Parmak family began running The Teddington Fish Bar, located on 194 Kingston Road, on 22 June.
With Ben as head chef and wife Reyhan as his assistant chef, their three children join the team with Mikail and Lara working the customer service side of things and Melis running the businesses' admin jobs.
The family moved to Surbiton from Germany in 2008, and Ben has been a chef since then, having previously worked at Mr Cod down the road and as a chef at The Teddington Fish Bar before it caught fire in 2023.
Speaking about why her family decided to take over management of The Teddington Fish Bar, Melis said: "I think it's the area for us. As we live in Surbiton, we're familiar with the area and have always loved Teddington and its community. As a family, we felt it was the right place for us."
In an exclusive interview with Nub News, Mikail said that the family has "invested a lot of time and energy into establishing the chippy to what it is today."
He added: "We don't want to change it, but we do want to improve it and give it a wider reach.

"We want to build on the shop's existing loyal customer base while introducing even more people to the high-quality fish and chips we hope to become known for."
A customer even told Mikail that there is a need for "posh" fish and chips in the area.
And Ben is the perfect chef to do that given he previously owned a chippy in Epsom Downs called The Posh Place.
However, following the death of his brother-in-law and co-owner, he chose The Teddington Fish Bar as his next venture.
As part of their take over, the family has "invested a lot" into the chippy, including buying new machinery and restoring the venue from the damage caused by the fire.
"And we have big plans", said Mikail, including giving the chippy's exterior a refurb with new colours and signage that is better fitting to Teddington.
He added: "It has been very exciting but also very challenging."
Currently, The Teddington Fish Bar's operating hours remain as 11.30am - 2pm and 5pm - 9pm daily, but the family hopes to change this soon so that the timings are more suited to customers.
Ben's fish and chips is probably the best I have ever tried as it does not feel too heavy or greasy like a takeaway often can.
This, Mikail said, is probably down to the fact that Ben is very German in his ways" - measuring every ingredient and getting all timings perfectly.

The family's customer service is beyond brilliant and should you wish to dine in the chippy's outdoor seating area, which is ideal for a summer's evening, they will serve your meal on a swanky plate with proper cutlery.
Speaking about working as a family, Melis said: "We all have our own roles and our own responsibilities and love our jobs in our own ways."
While it has not been confirmed why former manager John left the chippy, it is rumoured that he is now covering the fish and chips side of things at Chinese takeaway FreshFare on Broad Street.
