Teddington Lock bridge is to be temporarily closed for repairs, it was confirmed today.

Details of timings and the scale of work required are unclear, but any closure is likely to cause significant disruption.

The bridge, which dates back to 1889, links Teddington with Ham, Richmond and Kingston and is used daily by school children and cycling commuters.

The bridge has experienced a massive uplift in footfall traffic during the lockdown as dog walkers, ramblers and cyclists step up their levels of exercise.

The landmark bridge was briefly closed last year because of safety concerns but reopened quickly the next day.

Today a Richmond council official confirmed: "Teddington Lock bridge will temporarily close for repair works at some point. However, it isn't clear just yet when these will take place."
