Police called to Teddington Lock as sun-seekers flock to the Thames on hottest day of the year

Police were called to Teddington Lock today (16 June) after groups of young people were seen dramatically jumping off the bridges into the Thames to cool off on the hottest day of the year.
About two hundred people, mostly teenagers and young adults, were gathered at the Lock this afternoon to make the most of the balmy weather, which reached highs of 29.7 degrees Celcius in Teddington.
Sun-seekers were seen on the 'beach' between the Lock footbridges and many more were pitched up on the grassy banks by the Ham river wall, drying their towels on a nearby wooden fence and blasting music while sitting at the river's edge.
Groups swam in the water of the channel, some going quite close to the barrier of the Weir and others hastily making way for big boats passing through.
But when the youths started jumping from the Lock bridges into the Thames below, police were called.
Officers arrived on the scene at around 4.40pm and patrolled the area, warning the teenagers not to jump from the bridge due to the dangers involved.
Police remained at the scene and later started moving groups of teenagers from the Ham side of the river to the 'beach' between the bridges.
This was to make sure that the swimmers avoided being pulled into rip tides that would surge through the channel after the gates of the lock opened.
