A PETITION has been launched calling on the Mayor of London to keep the former Teddington police station for community and affordable housing use.

The station was closed permanently last year due to Met Police budget cuts, despite opposition from some Teddington residents and Twickenham MP Munira Wilson.

Local GP surgery Park Road and an affordable housing partnership but in a bid for the site.

However, this was rejected and the station is now on the market with Knight Frank.

Wilson has now launched a petition on her website calling on Mayor of London Sadiq Khan to prioritise "community benefit and affordable housing" when considering the value of bids for the old police station.

The MP's petition was started last week (8 February) and can be viewed HERE.

Wilson also visited Park Road Surgery, a GP practice which has been looking for a new home for over 10 years as its current one is not set up to provide for the number of patients it has.

She told her 15.6k Twitter followers: "Today I met doctor @nick_grundy and the lovely staff at Park Road Surgery to talk about their bid for new premises on the site of Teddington Police Station.

"I saw for myself how urgently they need a new building that's fit for purpose."

Commenting on a photo of the surgery stairs, Wilson said: "You can see how difficult it must be for those with buggies and physical needs to climb the stairs in this old Victorian property, and the surgery urgently needs more space to see patients."

The MP added that she will be calling for the police station to be kept for community and affordable housing use in a Parliamentary debate she has secured for February 23.

Wilson and Richmond Council Leader Gareth Roberts also wrote to Khan this month urging him to help make sure the station is used as affordable housing and by the community.
