Crossrail 2 in Teddington is unlikely to be affordable until 2030

It seems unlikely that work on Crossrail 2 will even start before 2030.

This is according to a new Transport for London (TFL) report.

Thanks to the coronavirus pandemic and people now working at home TFL has seen its income plummet by 90%.

They have therefore had to place priority on lower-cost projects.

So Crossrail 2, which planned to link us in South West London to the north of the capital, will be delayed.

The Bakerloo line extension beyond Elephant and Castle to South East London is also likely to be halted.

TFL will focus on the Northern Line Extension to Battersea, upgrading Camden Town Station and the DLR extension to Thamesmead instead.

The TFL report says: "We are being realistic about what is affordable over the next decade.

"Very large projects from the Mayor's Transport Strategy, particularly Crossrail 2 and Bakerloo Line Extension, are still relevant and aligned to the Department for Transport's decarbonisation plan.

"However, given current affordability constraints, our immediate priority for these is safeguarding, although they are still likely to be needed in the future to support long term growth and modal shift in London."

TFL received a £1.6 billion bail out earlier this year and is continuing to negotiate funding with the government.
