Popular Teddington doughnut shop Olly's Donuts will be spreading joy to customers for the last time this weekend as head chef and founder Oliver Tyrwhitt pursues other opportunities.
Olly's Donuts, an artisan doughnut shop run by Olly and his wife Wai, received rave reviews from locals after it opened during lockdown last year.
The artisan, New-York style doughnuts were a hit beyond Teddington, as customers drove from Battersea, Amersham and Epsom to sample the sweet treats.
Olly and Wai built on their success, setting up a dedicated website and branching out into decoration boxes, cookies, and vegan doughnuts on top of their core offering - 3 regular flavours and a 'special' every week.
The pair also started partnerships with local cafes including the Fallow Deer, Scoop and Waffle in Hampton Hill and Cheese and Pickle in Hampton Wick.
Within 10 months they had shifted 8,000 doughnuts to customers including England female rugby players, royal photographer Chris Jackson and actor Nick Frost, and come up with 35 special flavours.
But last weekend the pair announced that their adventure had come to at least a temporary end.
Posting on Facebook on Saturday 31 July, Olly wrote: "It is with a heavy heart that I let you all know that next weekend will be my last donut weekend as I have got a new job. (The getting up at midnight each weekend was catching up with me).
"Wai and I have had the most amazing year with Olly's donuts.
"We have learnt so much about starting a new business and have had the most fantastic feedback from you all."
Wai and Olly later told Nub News: "Having started up Olly's donuts we have really felt part of the wonderful community that has been so supportive of our new business.
"We have above all else loved getting to know our customers, receiving feedback and spreading some joy during this pandemic.
"We are proud of what we have built and achieved and are so grateful our customers enjoyed our doughnuts."
Olly added: "I have a new job as a food consultant and will be helping start-ups, SMEs and large food businesses with product development and technical support.
"So it's goodbye for now but hopefully not forever."
Responding to the news, customers of Olly's Donuts expressed their sadness at the development, but also congratulated Olly on his success.
"Such a bittersweet moment for us Ollys donuts lovers. Many congrats on the new job. Missing the Boston cream donuts already!" wrote one.
Another added: "Having only just discovered you-I am so, so sad to hear that Ollys Donuts is coming to an end.
"But can completely understand so big congrats on the new job. If you're ever feeling the need to make more donuts at any point - you have a massive fan base waiting."
Olly said he was "overwhelmed" at the comments and support
