Plein Air on the Thames – Summer of Culture 2026

DATE: Friday 7th August

TIMES: 10am – 4pm

This course offers participants the opportunity to observe, connect with nature and create visual responses to the world around them through drawing and painting. Focusing on the power of observation, the workshop encourages participants to slow down, look more closely and capture the atmosphere and character of the landscape through creative practice.

The day will be spent exploring the banks of the River Thames, just a short walk from the Landmark Arts Centre. From tree-lined stretches to wildflowers and local wildlife, the riverside environment offers a rich source of inspiration for sketching and observation. The group will stop at Teddington Lock for lunch, where benches, tables and bathroom facilities are available. Participants should bring a packed lunch and dress practically for walking and working outdoors.

Materials Provided: Drawing paper, boards, graphite pencils, pastels, charcoals, watercolours.

Materials Required: Sketchbook, something to lean on, bulldog clips, graphite pencils (2B-6B), other drawing materials, watercolour paints, brushes, packed lunch, sunscreen, hat, jacket.

Tutor Bio: Louise Anderson is a local artist and printmaker whose practice explores nature and the natural world through alternative photographic and printmaking techniques. Drawing inspiration from landscape, texture and organic forms, her work combines experimental processes with close observation and material exploration.

Louise holds an MA from Kingston School of Art and exhibits her work both locally and internationally. Alongside her studio practice, she is currently undertaking yoga teacher training, reflecting an ongoing interest in mindfulness, movement and connection to the environment. Through her workshops, she encourages participants to slow down, observe closely and experiment creatively with materials and processes.
