Two second-half goals were enough to sink Hampton and Richmond as they fell to a 2-1 defeat away against Dartford in National League South.

Charlie Sheringham and Marvin Hershel both scored mid-way through the second half to give the home side a strong advantage at Princes Park.

Jake Gray struck back in the closing stages, but it was not enough to spark an unlikely comeback and the Beavers lost their fifth game of the season.

Defeat in Kent leaves Hampton and Richmond 18th in National League South and maintains their miserable away form which has yielded just one win.

Joe Walsh miraculously kept the Beavers on level terms as Tommy Davis tried to flick a Dartford attempt over the bar from a corner, but forced his goalkeeper into an acrobatic save to keep it from dipping into the net.

Hampton had their own chance from a set piece early on as Ruaridh Donaldson clipped the ball forward for Ade Shokunbi to flick Gray in down the right and his first-time volley was well saved by the Dartford 'keeper at his near post.

Walsh once again came to the rescue when Hershel got in down the side and shot across goal to be denied, but Walsh pushed it back into the danger zone where Davide Rodari followed it up only to be denied once again by the Hampton stopper.

Late in the first half Hampton could have taken the lead against the run of play as Liam Vincent floated a free-kick to the far post where Tommy Davis rose highest and forced Joe Young to tip it over the top.

In the end the Beavers were the architects of their own downfall as Marcis Sablier was caught in possession on the edge of his own box and two passes later Samir Carruthers had set up Sheringham for the opener.

Ten minutes later it was two as Hampton failed to deal with a long ball from the back and Sheringham combined with his strike partner Hershel to set the latter clear to slot confidently into the back of the net.

This sparked the away team into life and eventually three minutes from time they got back into it when Gray picked up on a loose ball on the edge of the area and with the help of a deflection hit a wonderful strike into the far corner to give a faint hope of a comeback.

The chance did come to level it up as well when Connor Kurran-Browne chipped a cross into Tommy Wood who won it in the air but headed it too close to the 'keeper.
