Exeter 3 – 3 Teddington Men's 1s
Teddington Men's 1s travelled away to Exeter this week. Recently demoted from the premiership, the West Country side wanted to send a message to the rest of the League and came out the blocks fast to gain an early lead.
Teddington fought back in the first quarter to create several chances out of short corners and counterattacks at the other end, but failed to break through.
That period of Teddies' pressure seemed to galvanise Exeter's resolve to take all three points in this key game and their incessant press, saw them finish another two goals in open play.
In most games, a 3-0 lead usually signals "game over," but this young, evolving Teddington side does not lie down.
After numerous attempts, they finally managed to convert a penalty corner when Matt Daly pounced on a rebound off the keeper to claw one back just before the half time break.
Suddenly, the game saw a pendulum shift in the second half. Jack Stubbings got on the end of a string of slick passes to edge the ball home and pull a second back in the third quarter and create doubt in the minds of the home team.
But true to form Exeter kept pressing and creating their own chances to bring out the best of the Teddington defence and goalkeeper George Uyebode who turned in a performance to remember.
As the game entered its final quarter, it was end-to-end action with Exeter creating short corner after short corner.
And then the decisive moment came in the shape of a Teddington short corner at the other end – no hesitation this time, as the immense and consistent Jags Gill slotted home a well-earned equaliser.
Both teams managed to survive a very nervy final few minutes to leave the field sharing the points and the relief.
