UP CLOSE WITH: Antipodea, the new Australian-themed brunch spot on Teddington's doorstep

By Ellie Brown - Local Democracy Reporter 5th Nov 2021

A new Australian cafe serving all-day brunch has opened on Teddington's doorstep.

Radnor Gardens, located at the end of Strawberry Vale, has long been popular with local residents.

With its picturesque river views, shady trees and long stretches of green it's the perfect place to hang out on a hot summer's day - and some may even say it has an Antipodean vibe.

So its no surprise that Melbourne-themed brasserie Antipodea chose to set up its fourth branch here!

The new cafe, which opened this week on Thursday 8 July, serves all-day brunch and is a daytime version of the restaurant's Richmond and Kew venues.

Nub News went along on opening morning to check it out.

A peek inside

Upon arrival, we were immediately impressed by the place's thoughtful design.

Built in a modern flat-roofed style, the cafe has sparse decor and a utilitarian vibe, summed up by its corrugated metal counters and fuss-free furniture.

This is a smart choice as it leaves customers free to focus on the beautiful gardens around them, visible through the cafe's transparent walls.

Nature is brought even close by the gorgeous roof planters which hum with bees as customers sip their coffee.

And as the ceiling and door are left open to the elements, you can hear the outside world as much as you can see it!

Picnic benches are located at the front of the cafe outside its entrance and there is also an accessible toilet on the right-hand side.

Food and drink

We sampled Antipodea's coffee in both hot and iced forms, and can confirm that it is delicious!

As well as drinks, the cafe has a wide selection of pastries and breakfast and lunch dishes, including many with the ethically sourced cacklebean eggs .

In true Aussie style the cafe is planning to host Friday-night BBQs from July to make the most of those long evenings, so look out for updates.

Brunch is a big deal in Australia, and restaurant manager Luke Jenkins is clear that the rising popularity of this meal in the UK has Antipodean roots.

He told Nub News: "The UK hospitality scene changed when Australia started to influence the breakfast scene. Australia is renowned for inventing the flat white."

He added: "We're bringing a slice of Melbourne to Radnor Gardens!"

Importantly, the restaurant has taken measures to make sure its food is ethically and sustainably sourced.

It uses compostable pod brand Ozone for its coffee and all of the meat comes from sustainable farming company Lake district Farmers.

"Everything we source is not only ethical, but it's also high quality," said Jenkins.

"That's our ethos. We are independent and we want people to come back.

"We want to give something back to the community by being part of it, and providing great food and drinks."

Australian theme

Antipodea isn't just a cafe - its also a place that will remind Australian expats of home, and be of interest to anyone curious about the sub-continent's culture.

Homemade lamingtons, TimTams, Vegemite, koala bears and Minties are all available to buy at the restaurant.

And there is even a first aid kit for those feeling extra homesick.

"We are trying to have a smattering of Australia but not be tacky," said Jenkins.

"We have actually had more Australian people coming in since we have opened back up again, I think they miss home so much."

The restaurant's Richmond branch is already popular with Teddington and Twickenham residents and this is reflected in the choice of new location.

In Jenkins' words, "Radnor Gardens sits quite nicely between Teddington and Twickenham, and it's a nice small site.

"It's beautiful and bright and fresh and it feels Antipodean!"

The practical stuff

Radnor Gardens may not boast Australian weather, but Antipodea is set up to cope with the English climate.

The restaurant has an indoor area where customers can cosy up on colder days and its outdoor decking will be closed off when the temperature's not so hot.

Jenkins said: "It's an all-year venue!

"Before, the café that was down there didn't get much custom in the winter because it was outside."

The restaurant has around 15 tables and provides full table service, as well as takeaway and delivery.

Opening hours are: Tuesday to Saturday: 7.30am to 5pm, Sunday: 7.30am to 4pm.
