A long-running debate in Teddington is the future of Udney Park and its proposed redevelopment.

We have heard from both local residents and the chairman of Thamesians RFC on the matter.

Now we have this view from Jatish Mistry, Chairman of Hearts of Teddlothian FC.

He said:"I note that Teddington RFC have recommenced evening floodlight rugby training at Udney Park. The owners of these fields, Quantum, apparently have agreed to a three year lease with the club to occupy approximately 1/3rd of the site.

"Teddington RFC are not able to sublet the space so there is no good news for all the other local clubs such as my own club (Hearts of Teddlothians) who are seeking playing space.

"There is no update on Quantum's plans for the remainder of the site including the historic pavilion.

"Teddington RFC stood apart from other sporting clubs, and supported Quantum in their original plans to develop the site for luxury flats. The site now has LGS status, and these plans have been comprehensively rejected.

"The use of one third at the area by a single club (who already have a base in Bushy Park) does not represent a return to genuine community use. The proposed fence repairs and hedge cutting is of course welcome but is simply a fulfilling the owners legal obligations.

"Whilst Teddington RFC undoubtedly do a great deal of good in the community it is tempting to see their continued use of the fields for evening training as nothing more than a smokescreen for the developer whilst further plans are hatched. It would be reassuring to hear from Quantum that this is not the case.

"I am sure I'm not alone in hoping there will be a much more inclusive outcome in the longer term. Mental and physical health are becoming even more important as we all look beyond the current pandemic. Hopefully we will see sport return to Udney Park sooner rather than later."
