Teddington Hockey Under 13 Boys Team had a roaring success yesterday (17 December) as they reigned undefeated throughout the Tony Smith Tournament at Surbiton Hockey Club.

The annual Tony Smith Tournament is held in memory of former Surbiton HC Colts Director, Tony Smith, who passed away in 2006.

Teddington put forward both U13 Boys and an U13 Girls in the hockey tournament, but the boys ended up coming out top of their game.

Team Manager of U13 Boys Martin Riddett said it was "genuinely an all-round performance from all 10 boys in the squad, who have played together now for some five-six years".

The U13 Boys played seven games in total, winning six and drawing one. No goals were conceded throughout the duration of the tournament.

Martin added: "Our team comprised of our U12 performance squad – so they were playing teams a year or two older. All in all, it was a performance to be very proud of."

The Teddington club may be finishing 2023 on a high, but they have strong hopes for the remainder of the season with their coach Jason.

The team is in the southeast U12 Performance league, comprising of some 18 teams. At the halfway stage of qualifying, they are in the top three teams, and aiming to remain, to be permitted for the end of season Finals Tournament.

As a hockey player and later coach, Tony was well respected both locally and nationally. He was a member at Surbiton hockey club at a time when the club was one of the strongest sides in the country and indeed travelled with the club to participate in international competitions.

The proceeds are donated to The Ben Williams Trust which supports children with abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias) and their families. Tony was also a great supporter of the trust.

Donations were also given to CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) in memory of Emma Broad, a former Surbiton Colt who lost her life to sudden cardiac arrest at age 16.
