Teddington property of the week: Unique 'Shell House' on Cambridge Road

A UNIQUE 'Shell House' in Teddington's Grove conservation area is now up for sale.

The historic property is one of 52 homes that was built by the oil company Shell to house its workers in the late 1920s.

Workers for the company paid £60 to £70 pounds per year to live in the homes, according to a 2006 Council report.

It is located in the Grove conservation area - a hidden Teddington gem of cottages and Mock-Tudor houses built around the central Gardens just off the High Street.

Before it became Shell housing, the Grove site was home to an 18th Century manor house designed by Sir William Chambers.

Times Newspaper John Walter spent his retirement in the grand house, named Teddington Grove, until his death in 1812.

The house and land were acquired by Shell in 1920 and replaced with the estate, which was built to a suburban garden design.

Each Shell home has its own garden and members of the public can also enjoy the lawns and benches of Grove Gardens.

The Grove is bounded by Cambridge Road to the South and Teddington Park Road to the North.

It was designated a Conservation Area in 1977 and most of the buildings are recognised as being of Townscape Merit.

Like the other cottages on the estate, today's Shell House has three bedrooms and is two storeys high.

The home has the hallmarks of the contemporary continental cottage style with plain tiling and soft paint tones throughout.

Sash windows, exposed beams, fireplaces and louvred shutters are further evidence of the time it was built.

Such charm and character comes with a hefty price tag, however - to the tune of £1,295,000 at the time of writing.
