Teddington pays tribute to Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, who has died aged 99
Teddington has paid tribute to His Royal Highness Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, following his death at the age of 99.
The Royal Family said in a statement earlier today: "It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
"His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle."
The palace have opened an online book of condolence for people to share their memories and pay tribute to the late Duke of Edinburgh.
Teddington residents today paid tribute to Prince Philip who was the longest serving royal consort in British history and patron of 780 charities in his lifetime.
Cathy Cooper, a volunteer park ranger at Bushy Park, shared the photographs in the gallery above from when she and her family saw the Queen and Prince Philip on their 1954 visit to Malta.
Cathy shared her experience of the visit with Teddington Nub News
"In May 1954 I was two and half years old and living in Malta as my Dad was stationed there with the Royal Navy," she wrote.
"Even at that age I remember when the young Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip visited and how the whole island took part in one big celebration.
"The streets were crowded and I know that Dad put me on his shoulder so I could see what was happening.
" He knew a professional photographer so we had a few really good close up photos for our family album.
"Mum also took some on her camera which were mainly of the Royal Yacht Britannia in the harbour.
"Both the Queen and Princess Anne wore beautiful coats and after the event, my mother went to a local dressmaker and had made copies of them for us both.
"They were a fraction of the cost that Norman Hartnell would have charged and probably just as good quality.
"I used to wear Mum's coat when I was an art student in the 1960s. It was pale blue silk moire, fitted with decorative cuffs, pocket flaps and lapels. I wish I still had it.
"So the Royal family has been part of my life since a young child and the death of Prince Philip is a great loss.
Cathy's sentiments were echoed by many local groups in Teddington who expressed their condolences online.
In a statement on Facebook Teddington Together said: "It's with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to Prince Philip.
"It is a moment of real national sadness and most particularly of course, for the Queen losing her husband of 73 years - a bigger span of years than most of us can imagine.
"He was a national icon and earned the affection of generations here in the United Kingdom, across the Commonwealth, and around the world.
"Today we grieve for our Prince â¤ï¸"
On Twitter Teddington RNLI wrote: "Everyone involved in the RNLI sends heartfelt condolences to Our Patron, Her Majesty The Queen, on the death of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh."
Twickenham MP Munira Wilson also expressed her condolences, stating: "Very sad news. My thoughts and prayers are with the Queen and the rest of the Royal Family at this time."
