Teddington MP reacts to Udney Park playing fields being advertised for sale
Teddington MP Munira Wilson has given her response to a new brochure advertising the Udney Park playing fields site.
The brochure, released last week on Friday 18 June, highlights the "investment and development potential" of the fields including the pavilion and car park sites.
But it has drawn criticism from Teddington residents who gave their views to Nub News yesterday (22 June).
In a statement to Nub News, Wilson affirmed her support for a community bid organised by the Udney Park Community Trust which aims to purchase the fields from current owner Quantum and protect them in perpetuity for amateur sports use.
She also expressed her doubts about the investment and development potential of the site, stating that current protections would make commercial development "very difficult."
Wilson said: "Udney Park is a rare open space within our constituency where community sports teams can train and play.
"It is a great local asset and I pledge my full support to the community bid.
"The brochure from Savills Estate Agents which advertises the site for sale suggests that elements of the site could be developed.
"There is strong protection in place to prevent development of the fields including designations as a Local Green Space, an Other Open Land of Townscape Importance and an Asset of Community Value.
"These and other pending protections will make any commercial development very difficult.
"I urge the current owners to engage with the community bid for the site and I will continue to support the protection of the site for community use."
