Teddington Lock footbridge dramatically CLOSED by police because it is 'structurally unsound'.

Teddington Lock footbridge was dramatically closed tonight as civil engineers and police cordoned off the Ferry Road entrance of the bridge.

The bridge is expected to be closed all over the bank holiday for further investigations.

Police tape cordoned of the main entrance by the Anglers pub in Ferry Road while two uniformed policemen told cyclists and walkers that the bridge was 'structurally unsound."

Two men, said by the police, to be civil engineers from the council stood on the bridge next to a warning sign glued to their mobile phones.

A bright yellow warning sign attached to an orange barrier preventing entry read: "Advance Warning. Footbridge closed for public safety scheduled work to start w/c 25/5/20 Sorry for any inconvenience."

A police car and police transit van were parked in Ferry Road and cyclists and walkers who turned up to cross the bridge were told that the bridge was found to be 'structurally unsound.'

The blue iron bridge which is over 130 years old is usually a popular route for 'commuting' cyclists through Ham and Richmond Park but the park is closed to most cyclists during the lockdown.

Hundreds of dog walkers, joggers and strollers used the bridge everyday, especially during the lockdown for their daily exercise with riverside walks to Richmond and Kingston.
