Teddington lifeboat station raises over £1,000 at 200-year anniversary fish supper
The Teddington station of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) has raised over £1,000 from its annual fish supper, with 100 guests in attendance.
The evening was held on Friday 23 February at The Anglers along Ferry Road.
According to a spokesperson from the Teddington station, the pub has supported the nearby station numerous times in the past with its fundraising efforts.
Over the course of the night, guests enjoyed a quiz hosted by the station's fundraising chair, Amy Francis, who volunteers alongside working full-time as the head of sales at a local events company.
15 teams competed throughout the evening, with an unexpected taste test round proving a particular hit.
"It was brilliant, absolutely brilliant," said one attendee.
Gianna Saccomani, the station's press officer, gave a speech to the crowd where she highlighted the RNLI's invaluable role in keeping the country's waterways safe.
This year's event is particularly special however, marking the charity's 200-year anniversary.
The occasion has been commemorated with a range of 200th anniversary products aimed to raise £188m required to operate the orgnaisation's fleet of lifeboats.
The Teddington station itself was established in 2002 in response to the deadly Marchioness disaster, and is entirely run by 30 part-time volunteers.
Such volunteers must live within three minutes of the station to ensure they can attend emergency calls, known as 'shouts', in time.
With 60% of the RNLI's donations coming from legacies, it is crucial for stations to try and diversify their fundraising efforts.
Community outreach can often lead to significant donations as local residents learn of the work volunteer lifeboat crews do regularly: Teddinton's station has already launched its lifeboats 15 times this year.
This approach has proven effective as recently as last month (12 January), with Collis School's pupils and parents raising £1088.56 after the station's education team held an assembly there.
