Teddington: Former lock-keeper's house goes up for sale
THE house where Teddington's lock-keeper is believed to have once lived is now on the market, after being restored to its former glory.
Weir Cottage on 5 Broom Road was built in 1850 and old planning applications show it was referred to as the 'Old Lock-Keeper's Cottage' in the 1990s.
Later the cottage became a gate-house to the emerging Teddington Studios and was also used as offices by staff, before the site was sold in 2015.
Developers City Developments Ltd opted to preserve Weir Cottage's heritage and since 2018 they have been working on a sympathetic renovation which keeps many of its interesting features.
This includes the cottage's white exterior, arched windows, turret and gable ends.
These elements were borrowed from nearby gothic mansion Strawberry Hill House, built by Horace Walpole in the mid-1770s.
Weir Cottage was remodelled in the 1890s to become a Victorian Arts & Crafts house and in 1906 architect Ernest E Fetch made key structural adaptations.
It was around this time that 3 houses were built on the Ham side of Teddington Lock and these became the permanent residences of the lock-keepers.
By the 2010s Weir Cottage had fallen into disrepair and was described "not in good condition" by the Teddington Society - though they recognised it as an "an unusual and "amusing" house" worthy of listing as a building of townscape merit.

The former home of Teddington's lock-keepers is now a stunning 4-bed home with 3 reception rooms, 3 bathrooms and 2 outdoor terraces.
Period features abound including an original Victorian awning over the patio, latticed windows and a feature fireplace.
Residents of the cottage also have a private walk down to the river plus access to the facilities at Teddington Riverside including concierge and 24/7 security.
Its location a stone's throw from Teddington Lock and Teddington high street is enviable, while Bushy Park and the station are just minutes away.
