Teddington and Landmark Arts Centre lit in red to save the arts

Over a thousand venues were lighted in red last night as a light was shone on the struggling events industry.

This included Teddington's very own Landmark Arts Centre and Hampton Hill Theatre.

The government announced a £1.5 billion rescue package for the arts - although there are still many questions about how and where this money will be spent.

The Landmark has been very public about the difficulties it faces when trying to stay operational and Trustee Chairman Martin Nicholds has weighed in on the matter.

He said: "We are very keen to support this voice – the announcement from Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden yesterday and sounds very positive, but we don't know how the money will be distributed or when and what conditions are attached to it.

"Previous Government emergency funding has totally passed us by because of the small print conditions that came with it and the same is true for many other venues. For us the campaign has to continue".

"We are hugely grateful to the local community who have helped us raise well over £50,000 since we

launched our emergency appeal in late March, but we need to double this in order to see us through to

2021 when we hope to reopen and rebuild our events programme."

The Landmark's Lesley Bossine added: "We have made our own perilous financial position well-known over the past few months but this is not just about us, but an entire industry which provides entertainment and

joy for all of us and jobs for the artists, technicians and support staff that work in it - every venue in the

country is facing a very challenging time".

Local MP Munira Wilson also visited The Landmark yesterday and expressed her support for the 'Save The Landmark' campaign.

Hampton Hill Theatre was also lit in red as it is still unclear if the government money will be helping amateur theatres out.
