Slow and wet start for Hampton Court Palace re-opening
The magnificent gardens and outdoor spaces of Hampton Court Palace re-opened today.
The main gates were fully manned and uniformed staff with umbrellas were ready to welcome visitors at the main entrance.
But the morning downpour meant the number of visitors were limited and the car park was virtually empty.
Historic Royal Palaces issued an update on the new conditions of entry to make visits safe because of the coronavirus outbreak.
The CEO of Historic Royal Palaces, John Barnes said: "Thank you for your continued support during what is a really challenging time for us all.
"We've been so looking forward to reopening our doors again and I'm delighted to share with you that today the outdoor spaces at two of our palaces – Hampton Court Palace and Hillsborough Castle – are once again open for you to enjoy.
"In order for us to follow social distancing guidelines, we've had to take careful steps to make sure everyone has a safe and enjoyable day with us.
"We are currently limiting the number of tickets available, so please bear with us if you've not been able to book tickets yet.
"We're reviewing things on a weekly basis and hope to be able to welcome more of you in the weeks to come.
"We'll be releasing new tickets every Monday. Just go to hrp.org.uk to check the latest availability, for information about what's open and to make a booking.
We hope to open up our indoor spaces just as soon as it's safe to do so.
These wonderful palaces are usually alive with visitors at this time of year, and we simply can't wait to welcome you back. "
